Dr. Evelyne Oliel-Grausz

Evelyne Oliel-Grausz is currently Professor of early modern history and modern Jewish history at the Université Paris Cité, and before this was Associate Professor of early modern history and modern Jewish history at the Université Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne, where she developed a curriculum of Jewish history open to the full student body, and was head of a full-fledged two-year Jewish studies program open to continued education. Her research focuses on the early modern Western Sephardi diaspora, and on issues of mobility, communication, intercommunal solidarity and Jewish legal culture.She has spent the last decade working on early modern Jewish legal culture and dispute resolution. She is currently completing a book on Jewish disputes and legal pluralism in Livorno, using both judicial Jewish and non-Jewish records as well as halakhic material. She has previously been a fellow at the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies and at the Katz Center.Hannah Ruimy (her graduating peer at Maharat) and Evelyne Oliel-Grausz have launched a partnership minyan in Paris, LIBAH, that meets regularly for Kabbalat shabbat services, Holidays and learning. Evelyne lives in Paris and, together with her husband, has six children and six grandchildren.
